Church News
God loves when we offer flowers. If you would like to offer flowers in memory, gratitude, forgiveness, love, or special occasion. Send $10 to Woodrow UMC with the information and the Sunday you would like the flowers to be displayed on the altar. This is just one of the ways we can give thanks to God for who we are, and who He is in our lives, and the lives of our loves ones.

"Come Pray With Me"
Father God, thank You that You want us to cast our cares upon You. Thank You that there is nowhere I can go that you are not there with me. Thank You for having a hold of my life, even as I feel like everything is crumbling around me. Lord, I confess that I have let stress take a hold of my life, rather than You. I have let stress control my mood, my attitude, my emotions, and my actions. Lord, I repent of this! Please Father, help me see what is stressful in my life and hand it over to You. Help me not let the stress win out. Help me actively think on Your goodness to me. Help me to renew my mind with Your unchanging Word. I am so hopeful for my eternity with you, Lord, where there will be no more stress and I will be overwhelmed by Your love, beauty, and never-ending peace! Help me look back on all the ways You have rescued me from my stressful moments and look in hope to the future where You will one day rid all stress, forever. In the meantime, I know and trust that You hold my future. Help me live boldly in the truth of Your goodness and power today.
Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, amen. |
Dear Lord, I surrender my thought life to the cross. Help me learn to view my world through the lens of Your Truth, rather than fixing my thoughts on earthly perception, assumption, or opinion. Reveal and forgive the areas of my mind that do not bring You glory today. Slow me down and help me stay focused on You, Jesus. Rather than just reacting to distraction, train my mind to focus and respond to Your lead. Give me discernment and the desire to live out Philippians 4:8 daily, reminding me often to rest, pray, and reflect on Your ways.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen. |
Dear Lord,
I can do nothing without You. When my strength falters, I will look to you Lord. You are my strength in every single situation that I am going through. I cling to the promises that you have given me through the words found in the Bible. Lord, I cry out to you through the hardness of my situations. You are my hope, You are my peace. I find my joy in You. Help me to allow the truth of these realities to fill every part of my mind and heart. In your name I pray, Jesus, Amen |

Our Heritage
In November, 1771, Francis Asbury, one of the great pioneers of Methodism in America came across the Blazing Star Ferry. Landing at Rossville, on his way to New York from Philadelphia
He called the farmers together at the house of Peter Van Pelt which was the birthplace of the Methodist church on Staten Island. In May of 1787, a meeting was called for the purpose of veiling the Woodrow Methodist Church.
The first church was built of wood, smaller than the present building built parallel to the road. The entrance was on the side of the veiling.
In 1842 the church was struck by lightning. The building was torn down, and the materials sold to many of the worshipers. That same year the present church was built on the same site. It was located with the front facing the road. On December 25th of 1842 it was dedicated.
In the year 1850 two acres of land were purchased for a parsonage site. The parsonage was built in that same year. A frame structure was built in 1884 as a meeting hall. This was on the easterly side of the church
The hall burned in the fire of April, 1963, which leveled Staten Island’s South Shore. In 1971 the church hall was rebuilt.
Woodrow has the distinction of being a United States National Historical place and in 1967 it was registered as a New York City Landmark
The Burial grounds surrounding the church are older than the church organization. The oldest grave site known to be used is marked with a tombstone dated 1767
On December 1, 1976 the Wesley Methodist Church, and the South Shore Presbyterian Church which had been meeting In Eltingville, on Richmond Avenue, and the Woodrow Church merged in a decision to become one church and to meet at the Woodrow location.
